The Art Of Accepting Compliments!!!!!

Val and I have been talking about this topic a lot lately. We both agree that even though we are both confident with our style and image, we still find it quite difficult to accept a compliment. So then we started wondering why? At first we thought maybe it was an Irish thing, but after researching the matter, we discovered that most females worldwide are taught to be modest and humble. We feel that accepting praise will make us seem arrogant, we don't want to appear as cocky or self-absorbed, therefore accepting a compliment is a big 'no no'.

Any of our Irish readers will be able to relate to the whole "€10 Penny's expression", which you're bound to hear at least ten times on a Saturday night. For our American ladies, I guess you could compare it to Target. They have stylish and on trend clothing, but its just "cheap and cheerful". By immediately saying that we made our purchase at these stores, we're either (a) automatically trying to put our outfit down or (b) hoping to deflect away from the compliment by focusing on the bargain!!!While we should be saying 'Thank You" and owning our look. Its YOU that has picked the dress, YOU that has put the entire look together and its YOUR body that's making this outfit look as good as it does!!!

We have found that women typically have 3 common reactions to a compliment:

  1. She blushes, loses the ability to speak, shakes her head, and looks down.
  2. She will take the compliment, but put it down immediately.
  3. She immediately compliments the person who gave her a complement, to get the attention off her.
Val and I admit to being guilty of all the above at one point or another. But we've decided that this should end now! We put effort into our appearance, we want people to notice that, therefore we need to learn how to take a compliment. It shouldn't be an uncomfortable or awkward experience, instead we should feel a sense of pride, we deserve to feel good!!

How To Take A Compliment:

The team at Mode In Style have come up with a fantastic answer, and are sure you've heard it before. It's very simple really............just say THANK YOU!!! If after a couple of minutes, you notice that the compliment giver is wearing something that you genuinely wish to compliment then do so. Otherwise if you straight away respond with another compliment, you are again trying to take the attention from you and your compliment may seem disingenuous.

To finish, I would just like to say that Val and I are determined to practice what we preach and we hope you will all do the same. There is enough negativity in the world without us turning something positive like a simple compliment into a negative experience!!
